They have been referred to as the vanishing tumor,

in that with contrast,

they tend to become iso-intense to the

normal enhancing parotid tissue.

They usually are not quite as bright as what

you see on the pleomorphic adenoma

Here is a patient who had an oncocytoma.

You see that, like most benign tumors,

it shows a relatively well-defined border.

So quickly, we'll ask the question: is this from the

parotid gland or is this from the parapharyngeal space?

What we see is that this is invaginating

into the parapharyngeal space fat,

and since I told you it was an oncocytoma and

that they are relatively exclusively

seen in the parotid gland,

you should know that this is a lesion which is

going from the superficial portion of the parotid

gland to the deep portion of the parotid gland,

then invaginating into the parapharyngeal space.

So this is a patient with an oncocytoma.

This is a case from the literature,

a recent article in the American Journal of Neuroradiology,

referring to the vanishing nature of the mass.

So this is what's called oncocytoma, the vanishing

parotid mass. What do we mean by vanishing?

Well, it's very well seen on the T1-weighted scan.

And remember I said, we go to the T1-weighted

scan to detect the abnormality in

the salivary gland tissue,

particularly the parotid gland,

which is brightish on T1-weighted scan.

You notice on the T2-weighted scan,

it's low in signal intensity and vanishing right

almost iso-intense to the normal

parotid tissue around it.

And after the administration of gadolinium,

again, it simulates that of the normal

parotid tissue does the tumor.

So this is why it was referred to

as the vanishing parotid mass.

Remember that as opposed to pleomorphic adenomas,

which will enhance more than the parotid tissue
