Well, we've arrived at the "N" in vitamin C and D,
0:05
and we're going to deal with the neoplasms of the
0:08
carotid chief. And as I mentioned earlier,
0:12
these are usually dominated by the benign tumors.
0:14
And that's why it's kind of a happy
0:16
place to be in the carotid space,
0:19
because the benign tumors are actually quite
0:21
interesting. They include your paragangliomas,
0:24
and of the paragangliomas, we're talking about
0:27
the glomus jugulari, the glomus vagale,
0:31
and the carotid body tumor going
0:33
from superior to inferior.
0:36
We have neurogenic tumors,
0:38
and these are the schwannomas, neurofibromas,
0:40
neurogenic tumors that are associated with the
0:43
cranial nerves traveling in the carotid sheath.
0:46
We have meningiomas,
0:48
these are relatively rare neoplasms
0:51
of the carotid sheath,
0:52
and they usually are extending from the skull base
0:55
into the uppermost portion of the carotid sheath.
0:59
Then we have the malignant tumors.
1:00
And the malignant tumors are usually spread from
1:03
squamous cell carcinomas of the aerodigestive
1:06
system, pharyngeal, mucosal space,
1:09
or from their nodes.
1:11
But occasionally, you will have sarcomas or some
1:14
unusual diseases that spread
1:16
into these soft tissues.
